Things You Should Not Do After an IPL Laser Treatment

January 14, 2020

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) laser treatments are often used for lightening and removing age spots, sun spots, blotches, and reducing rosacea – a common skin condition that causes redness and visible blood vessels in the face. IPL is also a sought-after treatment for improving collagen production, hair removal, and reducing oiliness to reduce the size of your pores. Below are things you should not do after an IPL laser treatment.

Don’t Get Exposed to Sunlight

One of the worst things for your skin after IPL is sun exposure. Your skin is extremely sensitive after a treatment, which means time out in the sun could result in significant and painful sunburn. Avoid the sun at least two weeks after you had a hair removal session. If absolutely necessary, it is recommended that you cover up and wear a large-brimmed hat for at least a week after your treatments. Same goes for the fake tan.

Don’t Shower

It is very important to stay away from the gym, sauna and to not take hot showers in the first 24-48 hours. After your IPL laser treatment, the skin stays heated for hours and if you go in a hot environment, like a sauna, you’ll be creating a lovely warm environment for bacteria, where they can grow and multiply and give you spots.

Don’t Use Any Hair Removal Methods

Stay away from waxing, tweezing, and depilatories or other hair removal products during the course of your laser treatment. Trying out other hair removal methods on the treated area can prevent you from achieving optimum results. You don’t want to remove the hair from the follicle. The hair needs to fall out naturally. For anywhere between five to 14 days after your IPL treatment, hair shedding may occur on the treated area. While this might look like new hair growth, it’s actually dead hair pushing out of the follicle. You can exfoliate the skin by taking a warm shower and rubbing the area with a loofah or washcloth.

Don’t Use Irritant Products

You should avoid irritants to your face, such as products that contain any of the following ingredients namely Benzoyl peroxide, Retin-A, Retinol and salicylic or glycolic acids. Try to avoid products with these ingredients for about 2 days after your IPL treatment and rather pick a gentle but effective moisturizer to keep your skin from drying out. Don’t wear makeup or harsh products (like anti-acne lotions). After the redness is gone, usually in 24 hrs, you can apply it. Don’t apply perfumed products on the treated area at least for 24 hours. Don’t use deodorant after laser hair removal, it will sting.

Don’t Wear Tight Fabric

Don’t wear clothing that will irritate your skin. Let your skin breathe, by avoiding synthetic and tight clothes, including pantyhose.
